THE ROOM

(2016)

Social experiment/exhibition/installation

Chew on This — A mind-bending domestic playground where
neuroscience meets nostalgia, and every out-of-place object
whispers a story only you can tell… just don’t forget to stick your
gum on the way out.

Grounded in neuroscience research and spatial perception and psychology, this project disrupted mundane object placement to prompt subjective interpretation, emotion, and storytelling, transcending objectivity in public interactions. Using domestic objects and their locations to give potency for interpretation.

RESULT: 120 QUESTIONNAIRES ANSWERED, AND STORIES FABRICATED FROM EACH VISITOR'S CORE TRUTHS.
[DISCLAIMER]: THE VISITORS OF THE EXPERIENCE WERE INSTRUCTED TO START CHEWING A BUBBLEGUM AS SOON AS THEY ENTER, AND STICK IT ON THE SLIDING GLASS DOOR JUST BEFORE THEY EXIT.
This was a decision made after discovering through research that when the jaw is active, the brain has a higher percentage of generating focus.

Discovering the hidden narratives of objects and altering them was a revealing experience. The installation was opened for public view, inviting visitors to interact with the unconventional layout and later answer a structured questionnaire developed, a process that successfully proved my assumption. This project prevailed through an excavation of research regarding the psychology of space, interpretation and subjective relation to objects, and the concept of domesticity; as well as neuroscience. To make it as interactive and subliminal as possible, research was also made on the spherical gathering of personal data, in order to engage a schemingly evident introspection from the visitors.
